It’s that time of year – when people turn their attention to weight loss. It’s hard to pick up a paper or a magazine or listen to a talk show without someone promoting the latest cleanse or detox. Every celebrity seems to have her favorite. Groupon, Amazon Local, Gilt or any one of the shopping sights all offer them. Some are local and require picking up the products, others are through the mail. Some are even offered through on-line programs (like my friend Katie who runs a great seven day cleanse (http://www.katiefell.com/eat-to-nourish-winter-detox).
The question remains Yes or No?
As a quick disclaimer, I am a certified holistic health coach, not a doctor or a nutritionist or a dietitian and I certainly don’t know your body, but I have done a few of these myself and through my certification I studied over 100 different dietary theories. I had even tried many of them long before studying them.
My answer? Yes! But you need to find the right one for you.
I did the Master Cleanse for the first time over ten years ago. (The Master Cleanse Book on pdf) It really received a lot of attention when Beyonce openly talked about drinking the lemon juice/cayenne pepper/maple syrup mix to lose weight. I’ve done this cleanse many times – for up to two weeks (yes, that’s right, for two weeks I drank only this “lemon-ade” mixture.) I read his entire manual and it made a lot of sense to me. I gladly recognize the benefits of doing it – cleaning out my body, a lot more energy and even losing a few pounds – although the pounds did come back.
Cleanses are good if you want to start a program. It’s like hitting the reset button. They’re not necessarily to lose weight, although that is usually a side effect, however temporary. It’s more about clearing out all the junk. Like clearing out your closet. Doesn’t it just feel so much better when it’s done – when your clothes can hang without wrinkles and you can finally find what you’re looking for – easily and effortlessly? You can think better because your mind becomes uncluttered in the process. You look better because your clothes prefer to be hung up rather than in a heap on the floor. You have more time and energy because it’s easier to get dressed quickly when everything you need is easy to find.
Your body is the same way. It gets cluttered and your insides get coated with all the junk you eat and clogged because of all the water you don’t drink. The proper cleanse will declutter your insides.
I tried a juice cleanse recently – a friend had recommended it. I paid for the bottles to be overnighted to my home. They were so loaded with (natural) sugar I had to quit after three days since I was in a constant sugar high. I was hungry and cranky. It wasn’t worth the expense.
I seem to always start the Master Cleanse in the first quarter of the year – you know, after a few two many Christmas cookies. And the worst part of it is how cold I get. I know I need protein and without it, I get chilled-to-the-bone cold. It took me a while to connect the two. Now if I want to cleanse, I wait until the weather warms up.
Here’s an easy way to cleanse right now: eliminate foods that come from a box or can (i.e. anything packaged.) If you would shop only in the perimeter of your grocery story and eat fresh stuff, I guarantee you will be doing an effective cleanse. The rules are simple: eat more greens, drink more water and make sure you eat enough protein. Repeat. Your body will thank you in so many ways.
